Several of you have pointed out a column by Joan Ryan which recently ran in the San Francisco Chronicle. The article is actually a follow-up to a column she wrote last May. In both articles (which I have linked below), Joan talks about why Lon Simmons belongs in the Hall of Fame and why Lon himself is uncomfortable with the idea. At the end of the second column, Joan gives you a way to voice your opinion to the Hall of Fame. Read the stories by clicking on the links below:

Update of 2/28/04 : It worked! Lon Simmons will be joining this year's class in the Hall of Fame after winning the 2004 Ford C. Frick award. Along with Dennis Eckersley, Paul Molitor, and writer Murray Chass, Simmons was voted in for his achievements within the game. Read the whole story at:

Our good friend and fantasy camp trainer, Barney Nugent, announced his retirement from major league baseball at the end of the 2003 season. Barney has been working while battling an illness that has sapped much of his strength. He and his wife Denise spoke about retiring at the beginning of this season and decided 2003 would be his last. Send Barney a congratulations note at barneynuge@aol.com.

San Francisco Giants News - Barney Nugent Retires
Update 11/12/03 : Barney sent me a note to express his thanks for all your congratulatory emails. He wanted you all to read the following:
As you know, I have retired from baseball because of medical reasons. I have a
condition known as Myasthenia Gravis. This disease affects my strength and makes
me extremely tired as well as causing vision problems.
It has been a wonderful 27 years I spent in professional baseball. The
last 11 years, as assistant athletic trainer, with the San Francisco Giants, has
been fantastic. The Giants have treated me wonderfully and are a class
organization. Denise and I will miss being around all of these people who have
made us a part of their family. For that we will be eternally grateful.
I wish I could sit down and shoot the shit with everybody. I enjoy your
stories as well as you do mine. During fantasy camp, I tried to make sure
everybody was taken care of equally as well as pick on everybody equally.
Memories are wonderful. I will cherish them all.
Now as far as fantasy camp is concerned, I spoke with Mike Maxwell the
other day. I am planning to do the camp this year. So if your coming to camp,
great!
OUR FUTURE:
Our life as we know it will be changed
dramatically. Where we live is up in the air. My dream is to find a place
on a quiet, clean lake. I would like to sit back rest, fish and play in the
water. We would like to rent this place short term, while we explore and decide
where we wish to live long term. We also desire to spend a couple of months on
the Hawaii-Oceanfront. For some reason I can't explain, I feel I need to do this
one to help me recuperate. If anybody knows of a place on a lake or has
info in Hawaii that is reasonably priced, I would love to be considered. I would
appreciate you contacting me ASAP (barneynuge@aol.com).
I hope and pray you have a wonderful healthy and Happy Holidays Season.
Your Friend,
Barney
