DENIS HORN INVITES 48 AND OVER PLAYERS TO LAS VEGAS IN OCTOBER 20-25
Denis Horn would like to invite any players 48 and over to play in the National Over 50 Baseball Tournament in Las Vegas from October 20-25. Eligibility requirements are that you be 48 years old by November 30th, 2008.
Denis has played in this tournament the past five years. Typically there are 16 teams. Teams are seeded daily to match similar W - L records. On the fifth day, teams are paired for a one game play-off. Winners advance to the championship game of one of four divisions - A, AA, AAA, and AAAA. Technically a team could have the worst record going into the play-offs and end up winning the A division. Conversely, a team could have the best record going into the play-offs and end up as runner up in the AAAA division. This format keeps things competitive until the end.
Denis is considering entering one or more teams in the tournament. The tournament web site is www.Over50Baseball.com. Teams play six games, in six days. You can even play additional games as a supplemental player on another team (up to four more games for a total of ten).
Please note the Las Vegas dates partially conflict with the Old School Wood Bat Tournament in Tucson. However, as Denis points out, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas (and there will no bed checks).
Denis does not need a commitment at this time, buy rather wants to see if there is enough interest to continue to plan for the tournament. Those interested should advise Denis Horn (denishorn@redshift.com) by June 2nd.

GIANTS DO WELL AT THE 2008 BARRY BERMAN MEMORIAL IN BAKERSFIELD - MARCH 21-23
Neil Adams of the Dodgers hosted the 2008 edition of the Barry Berman Memorial Tournament. The Dodgers and Giants squared off at Sam Lynn Ball Park in Bakersfield from March 21-23. The Giants brought three teams and the Dodgers brought two as attendance suffered on the Easter weekend. For a sixth team, Dodgers and Giants looking for extra games combined to form a team.
The Giants went 4-2 in the games between the Dodgers. Michael Simon, Doug Penney, and Scott Lueders helped out in the coaching department. Ruben Donig, Terry Lee, Brent Tetlow, and Keith Wilson all made their first trip to Bakersfield.
Thanks again to Neil for a fun weekend!
The 2008 Fantasy Camp League will commence play in March and continues on close to a bi-weekly basis into October. Six teams (four Giants and two A's) will play a 15 game schedule. Those who wish to play full-time should respond to an email request in early February. A draft will take place in late February to pick the teams. Part-time or 'pool' players should respond to the pool coordinator's request by Thursday at noon of a given play week to get on the priority list. Open roster spots will be filled each week from these pool player signups. See this year's schedule and rosters at the link below:

2007 PAUL E. ROMAN AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The 2007 Lodi Tournament served as the venue for the presentation of this year's Paul E. Roman award winners. The award is given to the campers who most exemplify what we are trying to accomplish with these tournaments and league events. Just as the Dodgers have their David Blakemore award, we will recognize some campers each year for their contribution to the events. This year's winner was yours truly, Rob Weber. Thank you all for the recognition!
For those of you who didn't get a chance to meet Paul who passed away in 2002, get yourself a copy of his wife Jackie's book and you'll see why he was chosen to represent this award. A web page has been created to honor Paul and all the award winners. Each year, previous winners will be asked to select new award recipients. Winners will be announced at the Lodi tournament each year and they will be awarded a certificate as well as have their names etched on a perpetual plaque.
JIM "CHAINSAW" McCULLOCH PASSES AWAY ON SEPTEMBER 18, 2006

My former teammate and friend, Jim "Chainsaw" McCulloch, passed away after a long illness on September 18th, 2006. Jim attended a couple of camps in the mid 90's and then played in several tournaments in the Southern California area where he lived. My memories of Jim include the time he played in a game in San Diego while his then 10 year old umpired the bases. Jim was always smiling and just loved being on the field. Even during his illness, Jim lived vicariously through us by reading every email and web update we sent out. He frequently sent me updates on his condition some of which I shared with you all from time to time.
Jim is survived by his wife, Karen, and their two children. Karen emailed to thank us all for our support. Pneumonia proved to be too much for his system. Karen said he always wanted to get back on the field with us and that at his funeral, his Giants jersey was displayed. She told those in attendance that baseball was his first love and that the jersey represented that.
If anyone would like to send Karen their condolences, you can email her at kmcc1129@aol.com.
During the course of the 2006 season, Doug Rusch put in countless hours to file the required paperwork to make the West Coast Fantasy Baseball Association a non-profit corporation. By becoming a non-profit entity, we see benefits regarding our ability to rent facilities, rent them at a lower cost, gain insurance discounts, and receive tax exempt status. What Doug has done is a behind-the-scenes effort, but without his work, our costs are much higher and we may not be able to play at some of the facilities we have had the privilege to play at. Please thank him for his efforts.
